Hard
Instructions
Ingredients:
2 ounces gin (preferably a floral or citrus-forward variety)
3/4 ounce freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
1/2 ounce elderflower liqueur (such as St-Germain)
1/4 ounce honey syrup (2:1 honey and water)
4–5 fresh basil leaves, plus more for garnish
Ice cubes
Optional: splash of prosecco or soda water for topping
Instructions:
Muddle Ingredients:
In a cocktail shaker, add the basil leaves and honey syrup. Gently muddle using a muddler or the back of a spoon until the basil is aromatic but not torn.
Add Liquids:
Pour in the gin, grapefruit juice, and elderflower liqueur.
Add Ice and Shake:
Fill the shaker with ice cubes, seal tightly, and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until well-chilled.
Strain:
Double strain the mixture into a chilled coupe or a rocks glass filled with fresh ice, using both a Hawthorne strainer and a fine-mesh strainer to remove basil bits.
Garnish:
Garnish with a fresh basil leaf floated on top or clipped to the rim. For a lighter finish, add a splash of prosecco or soda water.
Notes:
Bright & Botanical:
The Beccicleta balances floral gin and elderflower with the tart, slightly bitter zing of grapefruit. It’s an elegant, garden-inspired drink perfect for brunch or a warm afternoon.
Basil Basics:
Use fresh basil and press gently when muddling to release the essential oils without causing bitterness.
Variations:
Try subbing in lemon juice for grapefruit for a sharper citrus edge, or replace elderflower liqueur with dry vermouth for a more herbaceous profile. A lavender sprig makes a beautiful aromatic garnish if basil isn’t available.
The Beccicleta was born on a sun-dappled terrace in southern Italy, inspired by an afternoon bike ride through citrus groves and basil fields. Becca, a travel writer with a penchant for aperitifs, had just pedaled into a sleepy coastal village when she stumbled upon a small café overlooking the sea. She asked the bartender for “something floral, something bold—but refreshing,” and watched as he crafted a drink from what was on hand: gin, grapefruit, elderflower, honey, and a handful of garden basil.
That evening, the locals began calling the drink “la Beccicleta”—a playful blend of Becca’s name and bicicletta, the Italian word for bicycle. What began as a chance concoction became a village favorite and later made its way into cocktail menus far beyond Italy. Each sip tells the story of slow travel, sun-kissed roads, and the beauty of spontaneous adventure.
