Medium
Instructions
Ingredients:
3 ounces mulled red wine (see Notes)
1 ounce cognac (or brandy)
1/2 ounce freshly squeezed orange juice
1/4 ounce honey syrup (see Notes)
1/4 ounce elderflower liqueur (optional, for floral depth)
1 dash aromatic bitters (optional but recommended)
Ice cubes (for shaking)
Garnish: dehydrated orange wheel, star anise pod, or cinnamon stick
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Mulled Wine Base (if not using pre-made)
Simmer 1 cup dry red wine with 1 cinnamon stick, 2–3 whole cloves, 1 star anise, a few orange slices, and 1 tablespoon honey over low heat for 5–7 minutes. Do not boil. Strain and cool slightly.
2. Build the Cocktail
In a cocktail shaker, combine the mulled wine, cognac, orange juice, honey syrup, elderflower liqueur (if using), and bitters.
3. Shake
Add ice, seal tightly, and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until well-chilled.
4. Strain
Double strain into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass for a smooth, silky texture.
5. Garnish
Float a dehydrated orange wheel on top or garnish with a star anise pod for a warm, elegant finish.
Notes & Tips:
Honey Syrup:
Mix 2 parts honey with 1 part hot water, stir until smooth, and let cool. It blends seamlessly into cold drinks.
Mulled Wine Flavor Balance:
If you prefer a bolder spice profile, steep the wine for an extra 2–3 minutes with more cinnamon or clove. For brighter citrus notes, add a splash of lemon juice before shaking.
Variation Ideas:
Swap cognac for dark rum for a richer, caramel-like finish.
Replace elderflower liqueur with orange liqueur for a fruitier twist.
Serve warm instead of shaken by skipping the ice and gently reheating the finished cocktail.
