Irish Sangria

Medium
Instructions
Ingredients:
2 ounces bourbon whiskey
3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 ounce simple syrup
4-5 fresh blackberries
6-8 fresh mint leaves, plus more for garnish
Ice cubes
Optional: splash of soda water for topping
Instructions:
Muddle Ingredients:
In a cocktail shaker, add the fresh blackberries, mint leaves, and simple syrup. Gently muddle using a muddler or the back of a spoon until the berries are crushed and the mint is fragrant.
Add Liquids:
Add the bourbon and lemon juice to the shaker.
Add Ice and Shake:
Fill the shaker with ice cubes, seal tightly, and shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds until the mixture is well-chilled.
Strain:
Double strain the mixture into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine-mesh strainer to remove fruit pulp and mint bits.
Garnish:
Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint and a blackberry. If desired, top with a splash of soda water for a lighter finish.
Notes:
Freshness Matters: Use ripe, juicy blackberries for optimal flavor. If blackberries are out of season, thawed frozen berries can be a good substitute.
Mint Tips: Be gentle when muddling mint, press rather than tear to avoid bitterness from the leaves.
The Blackberry Smash is a modern twist on the classic Whiskey Smash, which itself dates back to the 19th century. The original Smash was a simple blend of spirit, sugar, water, and mint, designed to be refreshing and easy to prepare. The introduction of fruit, like blackberries, adds both visual appeal and layers of flavor, bridging the gap between a traditional Smash and a modern fruit-forward cocktail.
Try swapping bourbon for rye whiskey for a spicier profile, or use rum for a Caribbean-inspired version. Adding a few dashes of aromatic bitters can also deepen the flavor complexity.
